Native tribe Tohono O’odham Nation granted license for online sports betting

The tribe Tohono O’odham was recently given a license to bet on events. In a news release from August 28, the nation said, “The Nation is finishing up a contract with the leading sport betting company that’ll power all the sports and event betting offerings.”

Near Tucson, Sahuarita, and Glendale, the Tohono O’odham Nation’s Desert Diamond Casinos will also have a sportsbook.

Ned Norris, Jr., who is the leader of the Tohono O’odham Nation, said, “The news we got today is a big step forward, and we hope to become a leader in offering sports and event betting in our casinos and all over the state. These new operations will bring in more money for important programs that help our tribal members. They will also give the public more ways to have fun and bring in more money that will stay in Arizona. This shows again what can be done when people work together.”

Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill

Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill that made sports betting much more popular in Arizona. Six companies. Arizona’s Department of Gaming gave online gambling licenses to 10 Native-American tribes as well as eight professional teams. Under the new state gambling compacts, tribes could already run sportsbooks at about two dozen casinos, but they needed the license to let people bet on sports online.

Sixteen tribes tried to get a permit. The Gaming Department said that it checked out the applicants based on things like how much they gave back to the community, how well they followed the rules. It also said that it wanted to make sure there was a mix of places.

On September 9, 2021, the first day it was legal for them to do so, a number of online sportsbooks opened for business.

Governor Ducey approved legislation authorizing 20 online platforms and 20 retail Ariona sports betting facilities. Each of the state’s major sports teams received eight of the ten “event wagering” licenses, with the other ten licenses going to a select group of the state’s 22 federally recognized Native American tribes.

Additionally, each professional sports club is also eligible for an online licence and may build a retail shop on-site or within.25 miles from the stadium where they play.
